A glass top is one of those upgrades that does double duty: it protects the surface underneath
and looks sharp doing it. We recently cut and delivered a custom glass table top for a customer
in the Granite Falls area, and it’s a good look at what goes into doing one properly — because
thickness, edges, and safety all matter.

The Project

We fabricated a 1/2-inch clear tempered glass top, roughly 43 by 84 inches, with a
flat-polished edge all the way around, and delivered it ready to set in place. That’s a substantial,
heavy-duty piece of glass — the kind of top that feels solid and permanent, not flimsy.

Why Thickness Matters

Glass tops come in a range of thicknesses, and 1/2-inch sits at the premium end. Thicker glass
resists flexing and feels far more substantial under your hands — ideal for a dining table,
conference table, or any surface that gets real use. Thinner glass works for lighter-duty
protection, but for a statement top, the heft of half-inch glass is the difference.

Tempered for Safety and Strength

We made this top tempered. Tempering makes glass several times stronger than ordinary glass
and changes how it breaks — instead of long sharp shards, it crumbles into small, relatively
harmless pieces. On a surface people lean on, set heavy items on, and gather around, that
safety margin is worth having.

The Edge Is the Detail

A raw cut edge is sharp and unfinished; a flat polish gives the glass a smooth, clear, finished
border that’s comfortable to touch and looks intentional. Edge finishing is one of those details
that separates a real custom top from a piece of cut glass — and there are other edge styles
available depending on the look you want.

Protect a Table or Top a New One

A custom glass top can protect a wood table from scratches, heat, and spills; replace a cracked
or cloudy original; or serve as the surface itself on a base. Either way it’s measured and cut to
your exact size, with the edge and thickness you choose.

What a Custom Top Costs

Pricing scales with size, thickness, and edge work. This 1/2-inch tempered top with a
flat-polished edge, plus delivery, came to about $846. For a heavy-duty, custom-fit top that
protects what’s underneath for years, it’s a worthwhile investment.
